Stop Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 from automatically rebooting

Stop Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 from automatically rebooting

the server after logging in

One of the recent issues in managing Windows Server 2012 is the way Automatic Updates works by default. If automatic updates are installed on a server, it may or may not automatically reboot the server or PC.
At the log in screen, you may see this message.
Upon logging in, you may be faced with the prospect of the server rebooting in 15 minutes. The countdown timer has started and there is no apparent way to click on a “Postpone” button.
In many cases, this will cause some distress. Particularly if this is a Hyper-V host server, and you have an entire network of 120 users accessing the virtual machines!
Fortunately, there is a fix to prevent the server from counting down and restarting.
  1. Open an administrative command prompt.
  2. Type NET STOP WUAUSERVto stop the Windows Update service.

This will stop the Windows Update service, and stop the countdown timer until the server is restarted manually. Don’t forget to restart the server at the next possible opportunity.

Great links for EF Code First and Unit of Work set up

Some great links for EFramework and Unit of Work implementation.

Earlier this month the data team shipped the
Release Candidate of EF 4.1. The most exciting feature of EF 4.1 is Code First, a new development pattern for EF which provides a really elegant and powerful code-centric way to work with data as well as an alternative to the existing Database First and Model First patterns. Code First is designed based on Convention over Configuration paradigm and focused around defining your model using C#/VB.NET classes, these classes can then be mapped to an existing database or be used to generate a database schema. Additional configuration can be supplied using Data Annotations or via a fluent API.

I’m a big fan of the EF Code First approach, and wrote several blog posts about it based on its CTP5 build:

How to map your SkyDrive folder in Windows 7

How to map your SkyDrive folder in Windows 7

SkyDrive is a great way to store lots of files in the cloud for easy access remotely. Windows 7 will let you map your SkyDrive folders as network drives, making access even simpler.
Rob Lightner
If you have a Windows Live account (or an old Hotmail account, for that matter), then you have 25GB of free storage on SkyDrive.
If not, it's easy to set up your free account, and that much storage should be incentive enough for almost anyone. Windows 7 users can make life even easier on themselves by mapping their SkyDrive public folder as a network drive. Here's how to do it:
  1. First, link your computer with your Windows Live ID. Start up the Control Panel, then select User Accounts and Family Safety, then User Accounts, then Link Online IDs, then Link Online ID next to WindowsLiveID. (You may need to download and install the Windows Live ID provider first, but it's quite simple and can be done from the same window.)
Step 1: Link computer to Windows Live ID.

  2. Sign in to your Windows Live account. (If you ever change your password, you will need to go back to the Link Online ID page in the Control Panel and change it there as well.)
  3. Now you need to get the address of your SkyDrive folder, which is unfortunately not immediately obvious. Open My Computer, then select "Map network drive" near the top.
  4. Select the drive letter you want, then paste the following in bold into the text bar next to "Folder": \\docs.live.net@SSL\IDGOESHERE\^2Public (Don't click "Finish" yet.)
Step 4: Start mapping network drive.

  5. To find your ID number, go to your SkyDrive page, then right-click on "Files," then select "Copy link address" (or whatever your browser uses to copy the URL.)
    Step 5: Copy URL.
    Step 5: Copy URL.

  6. Paste the URL into Notepad or some other text editor, then copy the text following "cid=".
    Step 6: Copy ID number.
    Step 6: Copy ID number.

  7. Go back to the Map Network Drive folder and paste the ID number over "IDGOESHERE" then click "Finish." It will take some time to connect, most likely.
Step 7: Paste ID number into network drive location.
Step 7: Paste ID number into network drive location.

  8. Log in using your Windows Live ID. Your new drive should pop right up.
  9. The folder name is pretty ugly, so you may want to rename it. Just right-click the folder name, select "Rename," and type in a short, memorable label.
    Step 9: Rename folder.
    Step 9: Rename folder.

That's it! You can now easily add files to your Public folder, or check them in Windows Explorer at your leisure.

How To Map SkyDrive Folder As Network Drive In Windows 8 And RT

How To Map SkyDrive Folder As Network Drive In Windows 8 And RT

SkyDrive helps users to sync their files straight to the cloud and use them on the go, wherever they find internet access. The service has become so popular that Microsoft has now integrated it into Windows 8 and Windows RT operating systems. And it’s speculated that more upcoming products from the company will have SkyDrive onboard. There’s one major caveat however, in the form of Windows RT not offering a way to access SkyDrive folder in the desktop UI mode, as one has to opt for the SkyDrive Modern UI app in order to access their cloud content. On the flip side, however, Microsoft has included an option to map any network drive, which can be used to map your SkyDrive folder as well. Even though, Windows 8 already offers a way to open your SkyDrive folder within desktop environment, mapping the folder can be done on both 8 and RT platforms. Just follow our guide in order to learn how to map SkyDrive folder as network drive in Windows 8.

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is launch your web browser under the desktop mode and visit the official SkyDrive website. Once there, sign in to your account using your Microsoft account credentials.

Step 2

After logging in to your account, right-click (or tap and hold if you’re using Windows RT device) the ‘Files’ button in the left navigation pane and copy the link via clicking ‘Copy Link Location’ (Firefox), ‘Copy Link’ (Internet Explorer), ‘Copy Shortcut’ (Google Chrome), or ‘Copy Link Shortcut’ or a similar term on any other web browser.
Map SkyDrive Windows 8_Step 2
This in turn will copy the link to the clipboard. Now you can open notepad or any other text editor, and paste the copied URL there, which should look something like:
https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The trick of the show here is the XXXXXXXXXXXXX part after the cid=. It’s an alphanumeric string unique to every user account. You need to delete everything before the xxxxxxxxx string and replace it with:
https://d.docs.live.net/
So that the final URL appears something similar to:
https://d.docs.live.net/4AADF97BA5996D5

Step 3

Copy the above link, navigate to Computer and open the Map Network Drive console via clicking or tapping its button from the Ribbon UI. If you usually leave your Ribbon UI minimized, you can click or tap Computer to see this option.

Step 4

You need to assign a drive letter to your network drive, so click or tap the Drive drop down menu and select a drive letter from the available choices. Next, paste the previously copied URL into the Folder field as demonstrated in the screenshot below. The ‘Reconnect at sign-in’ is optional, which you can simply leave enabled and click or tap Finish.

Step 5

When prompted to enter the login information in the Windows Security console, input the same Microsoft account details that you used earlier during the sign in process and click or tap OK.
Map SkyDrive Windows 8_Step 6
And that’s it. If all goes according to the plan, you will see a SkyDrive storage mounted as a network drive under the Network Location slider in Computer. You can rename this drive to any custom name of your choice.
